In 1870 pioneering engineers began to lay an undersea telegraph cable network from Porthcurno's sandy beach. This 'Victorian Internet' transformed the speed of communication to the British Empire and beyond. By WWII, Porthcurno had become so important that the telegraph station was moved into secret, bomb and gas proof tunnels excavated by Cornish miners. From here vital secret messages were transmitted around the world.

The secret tunnels, with their wartime camouflage and escape steps, allow visitors to step back in time experiencing the incredible sounds of a working cable station. Dress in WWII clothing and discover what life was like in Porthcurno valley through the war years.
Uncover the experiences of early telegraph engineers posted to remote and exotic corners of the world. Explore the links between early cable technology and the things we take for granted today like mobile phones and the world wide web. Discover how modern fibre optics work, and why 90% of internet traffic is sent by undersea cables, not satellite.
Knowledgeable and friendly guides give demonstrations every day, and there are plenty of hands-on activities for all ages. All set within beautiful gardens just 5 minutes stroll from one of Cornwall’s best beaches. Free entry to museum shop, stocking a wide range of gifts and books.
